new CD: Cello Circles - improvised cello & guitar

Hi
I'm a guitarist and I made a CD with the cellist Kalyan called 'Cello Circles'

Grammy nominated cellist David Darling calls it:
"An orchestral and sonic triumph of sound…you give us so many voices to listen to and as a cellist I would have to say that Kalyan is a first rate modern jazz and world music cellist…"

Check it out!

New Cellist Looking for Answers

Hello there, everybody! :]

I'm new to the whole cello scene. I've been looking to play cello for some time now, since I play piano and want to kinda expand my horizons so to speak... I've been fascinated w/ Zoe Keating, and inspired by her to actually pick up the cello. I am as of now browsing around for a cello to start playing on... however, I know acoustic cellos can run you up quite a bit of money if you really want a really really good one. I am an electric man myself, and would really like an electric cello. I was looking at Sojings and the new 2008 model Santini.

Santini:
http://www.saletime.net/electric_cello_07.jpg

Sojing:
http://paulmstanton.fileave.com/china/cellofront.jpg

I have also seen THIS cello here. It's a little more expensive than these two, but it looks like an acoustic/electric cello. It's by Carlo Robelli.

Carlo Robelli:
www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp

My point is... is this what I should be looking for? Or should I start off acoustic, and then move into electric? Honestly, I love acoustic cello to no end, but the idea of an electric cello really makes me excited. The Carlo Robelli one looks to be a good compromise between electric and acoustic, since it looks and would probably play the most like an acoustic cello, while having amplification... but like I said, a purely electric cello would be awesome.

Thank you very much. :]

Boston / MA: Cello needed for fusion project

Hi -

I'm looking for an adventurous cello player in the Boston / Cambridge / MA / RI area to collaborate in a new fusion project.

This ensemble will play "dark," medieval, middle eastern, contemporary fusions.

I play medieval bagpipes, electric dulcimer, various percussion from around the world and I sing. I have an amazing percussionist with me.

An oud would also be nice if you know someone, and I'm not afraid of electronics / loops.

These are a couple of other projects than I'm involved in:

Oakland/Berkeley Teachers that might focus on "Ergonomics" for a few lessons

Twenty odd years ago I was a fair 'cellist, and recently I've started trying to play again. I've had some success with a 'cello I rented from Ifshin (I'll buy one if I get serious enough) and I'm doing pretty well in first position, but sometimes it hurts. I'm trying to be diciplined and stay in the early pages of my old Schroeder and Dotzauer books until I develop good habits, and it's definitely coming back, but I'd like to take a few lessons to help me just plain get the left hand and seating positions right. There are a lot of notations from my old teacher in my books, but after a few minutes of playing my left hand often feels cramped and my left arm stiff (or not), I am grasping the neck too hard with my thumb, and sometimes it's hard to believe my fourth finger could ever really hold down the strings (in the right place even). (I am thinking of asking Ifshin's to shave down the bridge, but I'd like to see a teacher first.)

I *know* it never used to hurt. Can anybody suggest a teacher in the East Bay who would be willing to just give a few lessons and would be likely to concentrate on these kinds of issues, perhaps just get me to the point where I'm shifting to the third and fourth positions cleanly again? I'd prefer somone with a strong classical bent. I'd like to be able to get to where I could play the Beethoven Opus 18 & 59 Quartets, Mozart and Haydn Quartets again within a year or so, and start to play the first four Bach Suites again sometime, but I really just want t teacher to concentrate on studies and exercises with for a while.

Thanks,

F.

Cello Stands, any suggestions?

I am looking for a nice hardwood stand that has a velvet padded inside. Amazon has the Boston Deluxe with green velvet interior, which seems to be the best deal I've found so far, at $156.00 after tax and shipping.

Before I take the plunge, does anyone have any suggestions for this type of stand, or others?

Okay, so I'm doing Haydn D, and my former teacher at Peabody won't answer any of my emails... anyone know what is the most "accepted" cadenza to use? I'm working off the Henle edition & there are two cadenzas printed, one being much easier than the other. I only have two recordings of it & Du Pre, if I remember right, uses her own cadenza, but Rostropovich uses one of these. I guess it might be hard to tell me unless you also have the Henle in front of you or want to somehow cyber sing it ... heh heh.

Does anyone have a cello sitting about that they no longer play?

I have gone to a few pawn shops, and just cannot afford to buy one... so I am hoping that perhaps someone has one about that they would care to donate to an artist whom would love to learn to play...

Thank you,
Fredrick

Grr... after years of working on Dvorak, I'm beginning to notice that many orchestras ONLY want to hear Haydn D. It's a weird concerto, but I guess I'll have to start learning it. The one time I messed around with it, I remember thinking it seemed a lot harder than Dvorak. Anyone done both... comments?

I don't know if there are enough amplified cellists on tribe.net to sustain such a thing, but what the heck! Minutes ago, I started a tribe for cellists who "go to 11". It can be found at amplifiedcello.tribe.net
Regardless, I'd like to meet you if you're out there...

Does anyone know of any cool stuff (that would be easy to get the music for) for cello, tenor and piano or cello, soprano and piano? There's an amazing piece from an obscure opera named Luna, by Cano (which I think is only a few years old) but I can't find the music anywhere. I know Verdi loved the cello & there are a lot of solos in his operas, but does anyone know of maybe an arrangement for piano, cello & soprano/tenor.

Romantic, 20th and 21st century solo cello works.

The only romantic solo pieces I've heard were the Reger and then, not at all impressed.

I love the Britten suites and am familiar with the Kodaly, Schnittke, and Crumb works.

Also, unsure if there are now any 21st century works.

Do you have any recommendations of recorded works that you could share with me? I am strictly inquiring about solo cello works for now.

A Prayer

No one will hear what I play
My practice is a solitary meditation
I pray that the resonances remain with me
And that I may allow them to live through me
So that they add beauty and to the world.

I strive for worthiness of my instument
And of it's builder.
A purpose of my cello
Is to enable communication.
Yet no one will hear what I play
Until I learn to express the love and the beauty
That dwell latent in spruce and maple;
A potential that skilled hands bring to life.

Let every note I play be an offering
And every phrase a prayer
To beautify the universe
And to send love to my brothers and sisters
Who may never hear what I play.
But I hear
And I carry the resonances within me.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the 'tribe' but not to playing cello(been playing for about 5 yrs). I was glad to find this community.
Also, I have a question...what is a good but fairly priced rosin? And come in s good cover because mine always ends up cracking and breaking apart which is just a major bummer.
And how can I improve my sitting posture? I have a bad back and am hoping that improving my sitting posture for playing cello will not only improve my playing but also my back.
Thanks everyone! :)

Villa Lobos cellos en masse.

Have any of you participated in any of Villa Lobos cello ensemble works?

I am totally enthralled with the texture of so many cellos, be it the Bach renditions or original works. Being a Lute/Guitar player I find it interesting that he wrote so many fine pieces for guitar as well as cello.

The Bachianas Brasileiras numbers one and five are particularly charming. I have seen number five performed several times and the results upon the audience are nothing less than electrifying. Ever popular the Aria holds second place in my mind to the Fantaisie, in which I can see the swaying and swinging of lovely Brazilian hips down the streets of Rio.

I do love the guitar version of the aria, but it seems trite in comparison to eight cellos with a soprano sailing atop. Such a graceful melody as to enwrap the listener so completely, that the concert hall gives way to green jungle with ease. All due to the colors provided by the ever-versatile cello ensemble.

I've only heard the old recordings of his conducting these works and am wondering what if any of the new recordings you would recommend?
LA Cellists

I'm looking for a violist and cellist to play in a project I have conceptualized. Think: Kronos Quartet meets Autechre.
It will involve playing tweaked out trio/quartet music from new school kinds of composers, utilizing crazy effects pedals and performing the music in more of an "improv" manner.
We will also be playing some of my own electronic compositions.
Please reply to me with your playing background and musical tastes, but only if you are down to create some non-standard "classical" music. Thanks.

Does anyone know anything about techniques for "preparing" cello, as in paper clips, tin-foil, or special mutes that alter the sound (not just dampen it). I would love to hear about anything like that anyone knows about. Anything that doesn't actually damage the instrument, that is.

I'm wondering if there's any good sites that you can download sheet music from, preferably for free. I've browsed a little but haven't really found any good ones that don't require a membership or payment of some kind. I'm just really broke right now, but would love some new music to play.

Hello.
On Wednesday, I am about to start cello lessons. I have never played before in my life. I'm actually into electronic music and jungle. HOWEVER, I have it in my mind that I like the Cello. (Kronos Quartet, Blah, Blah)
Will learning technique for the cello transfer at all to other instruments or does it completely stand on it's own?

Alright, favorite performance of Bach's suites? Mine is Ralph Kirshbaum, on Virgin Records. Warm and deeply personal, without alot of the player's ego. Free with the rubato. Beautiful rich and warm tone. You can actually hear Kirshbaum breathing at times. Love it. Rostropovich put one out in his later years which, for the most part, i can't stand. Total ego.

Thanks for joining the tribe that I started.

Does anyone remember that Jan-Michael Vincent TV show where he would fight crime on weekdays in a top secret chopper and then on the weekends he would get away by himself to his own private lake and play his cello soulfully out on the dock for the audience of one eagle?

That's my idea of a perfect life.
