The lack of movement in this tribe was bothering me, so I felt a need to post.
What's everyone working on these days?

"What do you do with a drunken sailor? What do you do with a drunken sailor? What do you do with a drunken sailor EARL-lye in da morning!?
Throw him overboard and let the water wake him! Throw him overboard and let the water wake him! throw him overboard and let the water wake him Earl-lye in the morning!"

Re: Hello!
Tue, May 11, 2004 - 12:12 PMhello.. i'm a hack... i own a cheapo cello.. i make it make noises.. i am not a cello player... but what beautifully rich sounds eminate from the beast... i love to feel the vibrations travel thru the wood... and when a note which resonates with some other object in the room... my son, who is 14, also loves it... but, i certainly bow to the passion and dedication of all you real players... kudos! :)

Tue, May 11, 2004 - 12:51 PMI'm knocking the dust off of the Saint-Saens Allegro Apassionato and the Haydn C Major Concerto. I'm also putting the finishing touches on the 4 Nocturnes by Martinu and getting a good workout with the 5th Bach Suite. -

Tue, May 11, 2004 - 1:01 PMwhat does everyone think about the Britten suites? -

Re: Hello!
Tue, May 11, 2004 - 9:02 PMWell, I'm not really a classical cellist and somewhat of a hack but I've been at it for 8 years and 18 on the violin.
I play with electronic music that I write and then play cello and violin over it. If you guys wanna check it out, I will be playing at Ascension on Thursday May 20th.
www.redbullascension.com
I also do an array of traditional Eastern European music, Middle Eastern and Indian classical.
You could say that I am a bit of a cello and violin slut. I like to play with many groups in the Bay and am studio cellist as well.

Re: Hello!
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 7:04 PMAmazing works that never fail to please me. I love both the Rostropovich and Hugh recordings. I think the Hugh has been put out by Naxos which sure beats the price of the Hyperion.
I actually play Baroque lute and related instruments but am passionate about the Cello as it was what I wanted to play as a child and did for a short time. My parents never quite understood that the school did not actually teach Cello beyond a certain point.
I love the Britten so much that I even purchased the Faber editions a couple of years ago just to assure my ears of what I was hearing and how it was notated.
Still love to listen, I guess the fondness for warm resonance is why I play the instruments I do.
Do you enjoy the Britten Sonata? The Britten/ Rostropovich recording is a bit harsh but I love the music.
Also do any of you know if there was ever a disc with all three played by Rostropovich? I have him doing numbers one and two and the Sonata on CD put out under London label and at one time had a copy of him on vinyl playing the third.

Re: Hello!
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 9:26 PMJust finished a recital... Ligeti Sonata, Chopin Sonata & Faure Sonata #2. Now it's back to dusting off the audition rep: Dvorak Cto & all the excerpts. I wish I didn't hate the Dvorak Cto so much! Orchestra audition panels seem to love it... according to my teacher, "It sounds harder than it is & panels love that!" -

Re: Hello!
Wed, August 31, 2005 - 8:01 PMAre you kidding? Elgar is my favorite piece of music in the world! It's the only piece that I feel i could play every day for the rest of my life & never get sick of.
As for my Ligeti... trust me, you don't want to hear that performance! -

Re: Hello!
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 12:03 PMI love Elgar too, especially Jacqueline du Pre's version of his cello concert.

Re: Hello!
Sun, February 15, 2009 - 12:01 PMI recently broke my second finger, and I'm recovering from that. I performed all 6 Bach Suites in Beijing before the olympics at a bar in the embassy district. It took years to be able to play them. Now I'm too busy, and my finger is broken. Anyone need to make their electric cello sound better?
